Giuseppe Santomaso (Venice 1907 – 1990) studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti of Venice from 1932 to 1934. In 1938 he began his work in graphics, a medium that continued to interest him. In 1939 the artist traveled to Paris on the occasion of his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Rive Gauche. In 1946 he was a founding member of the antifascist artists’ organization Nuova Secessione Artistica Italiana – Fronte Nuovo delle Arti in Venice.
Since 1948 Santomaso has participated regularly in the Venice Biennale, where he was awarded with various awards. Santomaso taught at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice from 1957 to 1975.
Since the mid-fifties, he adheres to the informal movement even if the act of painting and gesture never get in Santomaso, the drama and the fury typical of this style. In fact, his works have a structure that inclines to balance and harmony of colors and shapes, in which nothing is due to chance. He is far from the international informal movement and embraces the traditional concept of painting as the result of his strong bond with the artistic past of Venice. The typical elements of his city, its monuments and the great Venetian painters are part of Santomaso’s works through light, space and color reminiscences. In his paintings light is floating, as if reflected by the Venetian lagoon, illuminating the lines and shapes that lose clarity of proportion. Santomaso studies the spatial layering, observing the squares, streets and alleys of Venice and at the same time, the color comes to life and is filled with joy. Order and harmony are the pillar of his work.
